OUR CLASSES - PILATES

What is Pilates?
Pilates was originally developed by Joseph Pilates to assist people recovering from injuries and then further recommended for people to help prevent injuries. Pilates works from the inside out – working on core strength and mobility and stability in the joints.  The end result is longer, leaner muscles, better endurance and increased range of motion.  Because of its gentle approach, pilates is suitable for all ages and all levels of physical health.  Workouts can be adapted to your particular needs and lifestyle, providing functional fitness that can lead to improved quality of life.
All of the instructors at Chang'e are professionally trained, each with an unique perspective and approach to pilates.  We encourage you to try different instructors.   Back to Top

OUR CLASSES - YOGA

Class Levels

This class is appropriate for those new to yoga, or those that may have been away from the practice that want to revisit the basics of their core yoga practice. The teaching focus will include  basic postures(asanas) and breath work. Back to Top

Level 1
This level is appropriate for those that have done several months of practice in Yoga basics and would like to move forward with more advanced poses. The focus is on classic standing poses, seated poses and relaxation poses. This class also introduces students to beginning forward and back extensions, as well as twisting postures and the beginnings of inversions.
Please note that for classes other than Iyengar : The components of sun salutations (a form of yoga flow) and prep work for inversions may be incorporated into this level of yoga practice. Back to Top

Level 2
This class continues to focus on the basic alignment of the standing pose and a broader range of sitting poses, twists, forward and back extensions. Headstand, handstand and forearm balance are taught. Students are recommended to be able to hold a shoulderstand in the room for five minutes before progressing to this level.  Back to Top
Level 1/2
This combined level class takes into consideration the abilities of the students in the room and offers modification of the more challenging poses to those that require it.  Back to Top

Yoga Class Descriptions

Iyengar
The teachings of the B.K.S. Iyengar approach are internationally respected for the sophisticated understanding of physical movement. Iyengar yoga helps students combine strength, flexibility, and endurance through precise attention to the body and the breath. The method is safe, orderly, and progressive, and the postures are adaptable to meet the needs of each student. Levels of classes follow the level descriptions above.  Back to Top
Hatha Flow
All physical yoga is Hatha yoga. (as opposed to karma yoga- the yoga of service, raja yoga- the yoga of devotion, etc) The focus of Hatha Yoga  is  to develop body awareness through breathing techniques, meditations, and asanas (postures). Instructors introduce and give specific details for and modifications of poses to promote good body alignment. Concentration of the class will vary by session and teacher.  Back to Top

Align and Unwind
Challenge your yoga practice in a slow and mindful way. This class incorporates the long holds of Yin for working deeply into the connective tissue of the joints as well as  some therapeutic/active restorative work and may include slow sun salutations and stabilizing core work in addition to the alignment based standing poses.  Appropriate for those with a basic knowledge of yoga poses. Taught on Mondays by Sheila Cullen, Thursdays with Meredith Bannan. Back to Top

Insight Yoga
Based on the teachings of Sarah Powers, this yoga class combines Yin(passive poses) to benefit and gently release the joints and tendons and Yang(dynamic poses) to create a rhythmic movement that ultimately develops a deeper body awareness and energetic integrity and sense of balance within the body. The class ends with a short meditation period to allow the individual to fully incorporate the natural congruency between inner and outer, upper and lower, and yin and yang aspects of the body and mind. Back to Top
Restorative Yoga
Through the use of yoga props this class teaches a supported, conscious body/mind relaxation practice. The supported poses allow the body to relax and open, releasing tension and stored-up toxins that can cause illness. Restorative poses offer benefits to both the body and mind, for conditions ranging from insomnia to asthma to chronic pain to migraines to depression. This is a very important practice for building immunity and bringing the body to balance. All levels are welcome. Back to Top
Yoga for Cyclists (suitable for all sports enthusiasts)
With most sports and weight training routines, we tend to perform repetitive motions that develop some muscle groups while others are ignored. Yoga postures and breath work are one of the most effective ways to correct these muscle imbalances or body mechanic problems. This class will focus on the areas of the body affected by endurance cycling: quadriceps, glutes, calves, lower and upper back , groins, forearms, ankles and wrists. Open to all students with a basic knowledge of yoga postures. Begins March 12.
Please note : As the weather shifts into spring, we will have a weekly ride after class for anyone that would like to join in. Back to Top
